Siiri and Ago with our colleagues Kati Orru, Ingeliis Siimsen (Institute of Social Studies), Evelyn Uuemaa, Ats Remmelg, Alexander Kmoch (Chair of Geoinformatics & Cartography) and Tiit Tammaru (Centre for Migration and Urban Studies) participated in a project for Päästeamet / Estonian Rescue Board for mapping societal trends and indicators that will affect the future demand for emergency services. The analysis covered key areas, including population, residents’ capabilities, societal attitudes and values, physical and digital technologies, the evolving risk landscape, and the nature of rescue operations.

Project results covered an analysis of indicators related to demographic, societal and technological trends over the past 5 and upcoming 5 to 20 years, and their current situation. During the project, a practical tool was developed to visualize demographic forecasts on a map. Lastly, the project enlisted recommendations on how to start integrating data sources dynamically, so that forecasts could be updated in the future as well.

The study report in Estonian is available on the Estonian Rescue Board’s website.

It was an exciting project for us, and we believe that the results of this project will support decision-making in the field of emergency services.
