SMob4All: Sustainable Mobility for All: Potential, Barriers, Enablers
Via the combination of quantitative and qualitative methods and relying on social practice theory, this project will create new knowledge of sustainable mobility practices and will explore opportunities to promote the adoption of more sustainable mobility behaviour through co-created interventions.
This interdisciplinary project has four aims:
- MAP human mobility practices and patterns;
- UNDERSTAND formation of mobility practices and the adoption of sustainable mobility at individual and society levels;
- DEVELOP a model of the potential for sustainable mobility, helping to clarify possibilities for making mobility practices more sustainable;
- PROMOTE sustainable mobility practices in an equitable manner through co-created interventions and targeted recommendations reflecting policy expert and stakeholder participation.
Travel survey among residents of Annelinn, Tammelinn, and Raadi
The aim of the survey is to collect information about the travel behaviour of residents of the Annelinn and Tammelinn districts of Tartu and the borough of Raadi, in order to better understand people’s mobility and provide scientific input for the development of urban transport.
The survey includes questions about everyday mobility practices, perceptions of travel modes and infrastructure, travel mode preferences, values, and socio-demographic background.
The target group of the study is residents of Annelinn, Tammelinn, and the borough of Raadi aged 18–75. The sample has been compiled by random selection based on data from the Estonian Population Register.
The study is funded by the Estonian Research Council grant “Sustainable Mobility for All: Potential, Barriers, Enablers” (PRG3200) and the Estonian research infrastructure roadmap project “Information Technology Mobility Observatory” (IMO). The study has been approved by the Estonian Ethics Committee (TEET160 / 31.03.2026).

On-the-move discussion: A day in the life of a cyclist through Paide
Imagine a perfectly ordinary weekday in Paide: you need to take the children to nursery and school, get yourself to work on time, rush to the supermarket in the evening and pick the children up from their extracurricular activities. It feels like a typical weekday logistical marathon, where you don’t give the car’s engine a chance to cool down. But what happens when, instead of a car, bicycles are the family’s main means of transport? In this practical discussion, we’ll hop on bikes ourselves and set off on an illustrative ‘cycling family’ journey right through the streets of Paide. We’ll cycle and discuss what such logistics actually look like and how they work on the streets of a small town. We’ll talk more generally about cycling in the city – those little everyday joys, but also the real obstacles that cyclists face.

Panel discussion: How can we combine everyday activities with physical activity?
Mobility choices affect everyone and have a direct impact on daily life, well-being, health and the surrounding environment. In this discussion, we will focus on how to incorporate more active and sustainable modes of transport into our daily lives, and what changes are needed to achieve this – in terms of the environment, skills and mindset. We welcome anyone who would like to be more physically active but is not yet sure how to make this change.
