As the University of Tartu is looking into more ways to be sustainable and formulating environmental principles as an organisation, Mobility Lab is helping to conduct a mobility survey as part of the preparations for making a mobility plan for the university. One part of the survey is a questionnaire related to mobility.

To study the mobility of students and employees, we are analysing primary and secondary data. We are conducting a questionnaire to collect primary data that can be found here. For the secondary data, we analyse university employees’ work-related trips. For student-related data, we are analysing students’ timetables to see how much mobility is generated from switching study locations. To get more of an idea of how public transportation serves students and workers, we are looking into bike-sharing data and how many available bikes are in the stations near the university buildings.

In the questionnaire, we are looking more into how and when people travel between their homes and university buildings, what modes of travel they use and if they have any specific troubles or worries about their experiences that are related to urban space. We are also looking into their physical health attributes if they wish to share them so that the university could focus more on physical activity-related modes of travel and incorporate more physical activity into work or school days. The important part is also getting more knowledge on people’s beliefs and views on sustainable mobility.

Age Poom, the Head of the MobilityLab, commented on the results of the survey, saying: “The survey results will give us an overview of the mobility needs related to studying and working at the university both in Estonia and across borders, and a data-driven basis for organising mobility and encouraging sustainable mobility decisions among the university community,”

All students and staff affiliated with the University of Tartu can respond to the questionnaire here until 16 November.

The mobility survey is organised and processed together with the University of Tartu Research Group of Physical Activity for Health. The Research Ethics Committee of the University of Tartu has approved the survey.
